El cementiri nou, res més allunyat de la concepció d’un cementiri tradicional, pretén mostrar la instal•lació com un parc on passejar, sense la necessitat d’haver d’estar envoltat de les imatges típiques d’aquesta mena de recintes. La major part del cementiri està enfonsat respecte al nivell del sòl, fet que l'integra en el paisatge. La baixada es fa seguint un camí en ziga-zaga.
Els arquitectes Miralles i Pinós estaven preocupats, no sols pel disseny d'un cementiri; desitjaven explorar les idees poètiques respecte a l'acceptació del cicle de la vida per permetre un vincle entre el passat, el present i el futur.
El projecte es va concebre, en part, com un moviment de terra que transforma el paisatge dels voltants, i també, en part, com una metàfora del riu de la vida. Una processó de "carrers" descendeix des de l'entrada, on trobem, oxidats, pals d'acer doblegats, comparats amb les creus del Calvari, proclamant el començament d'un camí sinuós cap a la zona d'enterrament. La ruta està folrada amb fornícules formant murs de contenció de formigó, i el terra té travesses de ferrocarril situades en la seva superfície de formigó. La intenció és portar els parents cap avall en el paisatge d'una "ciutat dels morts “, el lloc on els morts i els vius són més a prop. Els espais estan dissenyats per a provocar pensaments i records.
Gran part del cementiri està ubicat dins una gran fossa que fa que s’integri en el terreny i el paisatge. A totes les dependències del recinte abunden racons, objectes i detalls que juguen constantment amb la llum i l’ombra, donant a tota aquesta construcció un gran simbolisme.
El nou cementiri, del qual se n’han fet ampli ressò publicacions especialitzades, va ser guardonat amb el premi FAD d’arquitectura, s’hi han rodat pel•lícules, videoclips, ha merescut un capítol en la prestigiosa sèrie documental Architectures...

The new cemetery, and nothing could be further from the traditional concept of a cemetery, aims to show how to design a park where you can walk, without having to be surrounded by the typical images of such sad space enclosures. Most of the cemetery is sunken in relation to the ground level, which allows to integrate it wonderfully into the landscape. The descent is done following a zigzag path.
The architects Miralles and Pinos were concerned not only about the design of a cemetery, but they wished to explore the poetic ideas regarding the acceptance of the life cycle that allows a link between the past, present and future.
The project was conceived , first of all, as a ground motion that transforms all the surrounding landscape, and secondly, as a metaphor for the of life river. A procession of "streets" descends from the entrance, where we find bent rusty steel poles, compared to the crosses of the Calvary, proclaiming the start of a winding road to the place of burial. The route is lined with niches forming concrete retaining walls and wooden railway sleepers located on the surface of the concrete. The intention is to bring relatives down in the landscape of a "city of the dead", the place where the dead and the living are closer. Spaces are designed to provoke thoughts and memories.
Much of the cemetery is located in a great pit which allows a full integration of terrain and landscape. All dependencies, abound places, objects and details that constantly play with light and shadow, giving the whole building a great symbolism.
The new cemetery, which has achieved wide echo in specialized publications, was awarded the FAD architecture Award; movies and video clips have been filmed, and a chapter has been earned in the prestigious Documentary Series .. “Architectures” .
