You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave marker for John T. Burchfield, a veteran of the Civil War. Burchfield served with Company G of the 11th Alabama Infantry Regiment, a unit known as the Northport Rifles.
The Northport Rifles first saw action at Seven Pines and then at Gaines Mill. However, it was at Frazier's Farm that the Northport Rifles as well as the other companies of the 11th charged across an open field and engaged in a bloody struggle over the enemy's batteries, wherein the bayonet was the chief weapon. Here at Frazier’s Farm the 11th lost 8 company commanding officers, and also had 182 killed or wounded in the battle.
The regiment came under fire at 2nd Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and at Salem. The regiment moved into Pennsylvania and was badly cut up at Gettysburg. They fought at The Wilderness and Spotsylvania, then at Petersburg with almost constant skirmishing. The 11th was in the column that retook the line broken at the "Crater," was in the effort to retake the Weldon Railroad, fought at Burgess' Mill, and was sternly confronting the foe at Appomattox when astounded by the news of the surrender.
In the end, of the 1,100 men that had originally enlisted in the 11th Regiment, fewer than 200 were present at Appomattox to lay down their arms at the surrender.
To locate the final, gather information from the grave marker.
