Geocache Description:

Although I haven't logged many caches I have found and been party to lots more finds with my Mom, so I figured I was ready for a hide of my own (my Mom helped).  For this cache, I've combined two of my favorite things - butterflies and mythology.  Look for Ulysses flitting around, but he is shy, so look behind.

The scientific name for the Ulysses Butterfly – also known as the “Blue Mountain Butterfly” or the “Blue Mountain Swallowtail” – is Papilio Ulysses.  It is a large swallowtail butterfly with a wingspan of about 5.5 inches (14cm) found on every continent except Antarctica, but is endemic to northeastern Australia in eastern Queensland and is an emblem for Queensland tourism.  The namesake of the butterfly is Ulysses, which is the Roman name for the Greek hero Odysseus, a character in ancient Greek literature and the central character of Homer’s Odyssey. The underside of the wings is a subdued black and brown, but the top of the wings is an iridescent electric blue and, when in flight, can be seen hundreds of meters away as sudden bright blue flashes.  The Ulysses lives beneath the canopy in rain forests and when it is perched the intense blue of its wings is hidden by the plainer brown underside, helping it to blend in with its surroundings and stay hidden from snakes, frogs, birds, and mammals. There are 16 known subspecies of the Ulysses and the wingspan can vary in size depending on the subspecies.

There are several trailheads you can start at to reach Ulysses, but I have waymarked the closest.  There is a small parking lot at that trailhead, but do not park there – it is reserved for Mt. Park Clubhouse members; park across the street or down the street.
CONGRATULATIONS TO CRIZZLER on his persistent, late-night FTF!
