Geocache Description:


A church dedicated to St Gregory the Great has been on this site for over a 1000 years and it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1087. The present St. Gregory's church was built in 1852 following the demolition of the previous church. The church was re-built on its former foundations and took three years to complete. As part of the re-build the 12th century round tower and 13th century spire were taken down, all the stones marked and then re-built with the original stones.



The church is built of flint and consists of a chancel, nave, north and south aisles and west tower It stands in a church yard that measures over an acre. St. Gregory's is only one of two churches in Berkshire that has a round tower. The other is St. Mary's at Great Shefford.
Parking is on the road side next to the church. The published coordinates take you to a seat in memory of George and Margaret Wallis. George died in the year ABCD and Margaret was born in the year EFGH.
