Geocache Description:

Typical suburban fringe landscape, with good paths and easy access via local housing estates built on reclaimed industrial land. If the trees could talk...Can be a bit muddy and slippery in rainy weather. You might have to have a paddle in the stream; do be careful if the river is high. You may get more than your feet wet!
WARNING - if the river is in flood, use caution, especially if you have children or a dog with you!!

The Miller Brook Housing estate (built next to Kirklees Brook, the name Miller Brook being a fancy of the developers) was built on the site of an old mill belonging to Courtaulds, and there are still a few old signs around, rusting away amongst the trees. The chimney was taken down by local legendary steeplejack Fred Dibnah in the 90's.

When the developers moved in, and Bury Council started to turn adjacent land into a local nature reserve, part of the plan was to re-naturalise the course of the brook. The dam near the cache site was already badly damaged by flood waters, so breaking down the remains was not a huge job, and the water now flows without interruption although some work has been done to try and retain the bank when the flood waters rise.

Across the brook is the Greenmount Bird Hospital, strangely named, since it does not, as far as I know, fall within the boundaries of Greenmount. They do great work, however, coping with numbers of injured and sick birds on a daily basis, and you may hear the raucous cries of a heron who often re-visists, though he has been free to fly for a few years since he was restored to health there!

Access the area from Brandlesholme Road, via Garside Hey and the Miller Brook estate, or else make your way over via paths from the Kirklees Trail (Sustrans NCR6) which can be accessed at many points in Tottington. Please don't drive down the track past Brandlesholme Old Hall (unless you have s sick bird!) as this is a private road and public footpath, frequently used by dog walkers and families with kids on bikes or ponies etc.

The cache is a smallish tube - please remove and replace with care; there is no need to untie anything!
