Las minas fueron explotadas durante el siglo XIX y hasta la mitad del siglo X, dando buenos beneficios a sus propietarios, los cuales pagaban a los obreros un miserable jornal, que les hacía vivir casi en la miseria. Antes de aprobar la jornada laboral de 8 horas, se trabajaba de sol a sol y en verano, eso eran muchas horas...
Había varias minas en explotación, entre ellas más importantes, Santa Ana, El Triunfo, Impensada, San Antonio. El mineral se transportaba al Puerto, donde se llevaban en barcos, los mismos que traían el carbon para las calderas.
