Geocache Description:

Site of James Nesmith Homestead

Jesse Applegate, Samuel Gardner, and James Nesmith arrived here on the 1st wagon train to Polk County in 1843. The historical sign and homestead are across the street. The land on both sides of this road is part of the original homestead. The house you see is the original house though you would never know it. It was gutted and remodeled in the 1930's. The current landowner's family have had possession of the property since the early 1940's. The property owner is aware that a geocache has been placed across the street, but you should consider any people you encounter as muggles. James Nesmith (1820-1885) was born in Canada and grew up in New England. When he arrived in Oregon he was a lawyer. He entered politics and became part of the provisional government of Oregon. After statehood he became a U.S. representative and senator. He was the only Democrat in the Senate to vote for the 13th amendment which abolished slavery in the United States. Despite that he was aggressive against Native Americans when he served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. He stated the extermination of the Chetco people (southern Oregon coast) "would occasion no regrets at this office." * Of course the U.S. Government and all the pioneers were busy stealing the land of the original inhabitants of this country. He died at age 64 and is buried on the south bank of Rickreall Creek. Jesse Applegate (1811-1888) led people to the area on the Oregon Trail. Samuel Gardner was an early pioneer in Clatsop County and a member of the Oregon Territorial Court. I was unable to locate brith/death dates. *Oregon and the collapse of the Illahee: U.S. empire and the transformation of the indigenous World 1792-1859). The cache is a simple hide and should be an easy grab. Please recover. There is a nearby pull-off. No need to trespass onto private property. ***********CHEERS TO toro55 FOR THE FTF******************
