Geocache Description:

A tablock container with a view.

This cache is hidden on top of Knocknarea, a 327m high hill with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. It takes between half an hour & 45 minutes to go from the well signposted car park to the summit. It can be fairly steep in places with loose gravel so take care and use appropriate footwear.

Also at the top and visible from that same countryside is a large cairn, 55m in diameter and 10m high. Unexcavated it is believed to contain a Neolithic passage tomb dated to around 3500 to 3000 BC.
There are the remains of a number of other passage tombs and hut sites up here which show that it must have been an important site in the Neolithic period.

Maeve was a legendary Iron age Queen of Connacht, the seat of which was at Rathcroghan in Co. Roscommon. She is reputedly buried there but legend also has it that she was entombed here in this mound, buried upright facing her enemies in Ulster.

Re-hide as found please.

Please don’t climb the cairn while up there to avoid further damage to it.
