This beautiful stone culvert is the gateway to a locally popular scenic area known as the Hidden Valley. It was constructed as part of the New York & Erie Railroad which was built to connect New York City with Dunkirk on Lake Erie. Construction of the New York & Erie Railroad started in 1835, and was built as a consolation to the people of the southern tier who were not able to benefit from the large state investment in the Erie Canal. The railroad has gone through a number of mergers, buy outs and name changes over the years. In 1859 it became the Erie Railway, in 1874 it became the New York, Lake Erie & Western Railroad and then the Erie Railroad in 1895. In 1960, it became the Erie Lackawanna Rail Road and in 1976 Conrail. Today some of the old Erie Railroad lines are operated by Norfolk Southern Railway.
