SUMAC propagates both by seeds, which are spread by birds and other animals through their droppings, and by new sprouts from rhizomes, forming large colonies. Its ripe fruits is a cluster of tiny fruit covered by a red, acidulous down. The clusters yield a beverage similar to pink lemonade. Its easily pruned wood was once used to make spouts to collect maple syrup.
