I have two geocaching friends. One is named Dorothy, the other Dashiell (on their request, their surnames and caching names will not be revealed). I catch up with them occasionally to hear about their geocaching exploits. Their most recent trip was probably their most intriguing so far - they covered a big distance and scored quite a number of geocaches. Here is a recap of their adventure.

The pair started out by hiring a car from Melbourne and driving out. The first leg of the journey was in the Grampians. On the first, second and third days, they discovered three caches per day; for the fourth day, they were less lucky and only found one, with a couple of DNFs. The next day the pair moved to the Little Desert, found four caches, then moved across the border, picking up five caches on day six. South Australia was a new and strange place to them, so they wasted no opportunities.

Day seven saw them pick up five caches on the road to Adelaide, before grabbing three, then just one in Spring Gully on day nine before Dorothy unfortunately fell ill to a minor cold. On day ten, she started feeling better, so the pair went to Mt. Remarkable and grabbed three caches, with a further three on day 11. Dashiell was hit by the same cold just the next day, so the pair spent a couple more days relaxing at Mt. Remarkable, grabbing a cache a day. Day 14, signifying two weeks on the go, saw the two cachers driving along the Eyre Highway and grabbing three caches along the way. Lincoln National Park was their next big stop, and definitely big as the pair cracked five caches each on days 15 and 16, four on day 17 and three on day 18.

Having practically exhausted Lincoln, the pair moved across to Coffin Bay and got two caches each on days 19 and 20. On the road again, the pair backtracked towards Port Augusta. Day 21 saw them grab just the one cache as they focused on driving, then next day a brief stop-over in Whyalla was required, whereupon the pair found five caches. A further five were found on day 23 in Port Augusta, and ditto for day 24. On their way to the Flinders Ranges, the two found just two caches.

Unfortunately, the next few days were not so great for Dorothy and Dashiell. Days 26 and 27 each saw the pair find two, then day 28 saw them find three. Determined to keep going, the pair found some trickier caches - one each on days 29 and 30. Having said that, up to now (the half way point) the pair had managed to find 87 caches in thirty days. Not a bad effort!

For the next few days, the pair focused on picking up drive-bys on the way north. On day 31, the pair picked up three along the 4WD track aiming for Coober Pedy. On their way to Yulara over the next two days, one and then two caches were found. The pair picked up the pace near Uluru and found three caches along the way. There being not many caches in the area, the two only grabbed a single one on day 35.

A quick trip to Alice Springs rectified this, as they found five on each of the next three days (picking up their hundredth for the trip in the process). Again, they had exhausted an area so the pair moved further north and got three on the road to Tennant Creek. Day 40 was a single-cache day on the long drive to Katherine. In and around Katherine the two grabbed three caches on each of days 41 and 42, but again a 24-hour bug struck Dashiell and days 43 and 44 saw a couple of single-cache days.

Day 45 was spent driving towards Western Australia, picking up three along the highway. Kununurra and Wyndham were good cache-mines for the pair. For the next three days, the couple picked up five, then four, then three caches. A tricky stretch along the highway to Broome made things hard on the two but they still found two caches on day 49 and two more on day 50. Nearly there! A long drive on day 51 meant just one cache, but around Karratha the pair spent three days, grabbing another fifteen caches (five per day). Backtracking again to Karijini, the two picked up two caches, stayed the night, and grabbed two further on day 56. The pair realised they needed to get their skates on, having only a few days left, so on day 57 they drove from Newman to Meekatharra and picked up two caches on the way.

Day 58 and day 59 saw the two going all the way to Geraldton, grabbing three caches, then one. A drive down to Perth on Day 60 saw them grab just one cache, then three on Day 61 around the state's capital. The holiday over, the pair returned their car and flew back to Melbourne. Exhausted but happy, the pair returned to life having found 173 caches in total.
