A hard climbing up to the summit of the second top of Appennino:
be on the summit of Mt Amaro requires to climb at least 1300 m of difference level!
The Maiella is a massif is at the center of the Maiella National Park; it is formed by a compact limestone massif, on which summit are the highest peaks in the group: Monte Amaro 2,793 m, Monte Acquaviva 2,737 m, Monte Focalone 2,676 m, Monte Rotondo 2,656 m, Monte Macellaro 2,646 m, Pesco Falcone 2,546 m, Cima delle Murelle 2,598 m.
The highest peak is Monte Amaro at 2,793 m (9,163 ft), the second highest of the entire Appennino range, after Corno Grande at Gran Sasso.
Finding this cache is anyway a challenge: the climb to Monte Amaro is among the longest in the Apennines, from anywhere you leave, and requires at least 8 hours of hiking to go to the summit and be back.
If you start from Fara San Martino, it can take even two days.
During the winter there is snow, most likely the trigonometric post is completely under the snow: in this case you need axe ice and crampons to get there and the rating would increase to 3/5.
Anyway also in summer the summit is usually cold and windy, so take care to use proper clothes.
I placed this cache starting from Fara San Martino, and climbing up for 2400 m of difference level; it was at the end of June, and I met some snow on some parts of the long path.
It took 6 hours to get there from parking and 4 hours to be back at car.
Of course you can chose other paths with less difference level, but not less than 1300m!
