Geocache Description:

DO NOT PARK ON THE BRIDGE!  Safe parking is available on the north/west side of the bridge.  Watch for muggles on the trail below.

The Red River Floodway is an artificial river channel that carries excess floodwaters around Winnipeg.  The 42 km-long channel was constructed between 1962-1968.  It is affectionately known as Duff’s Ditch, in honour of the Manitoba Premier, Duff Roblin, who spearheaded its construction.  (For more information about this engineering marvel, see my Courchaine Bridge cache, (GC48EHN).

In July 2012, the Duff Roblin Parkway Tail opened, allowing pedestrians, cyclists, and skiers to make their way around nearly the entire length of the Floodway, with additional service into Bird’s Hill Park.  This active transportation trail may cause stealth issues for cachers, especially if the trail is being serviced by government personnel at the time.

Seven public roads cross the Red River Floodway between its headwaters in St. Norbert and its mouth in Lockport.  From south to north they are St. Mary’s Road (P.R. 200), Lagimodiere Boulevard (PTH 59) south, Fermor Avenue (Trans-Canada Highway), Dugald Road (PTH 15) Lagimodiere Boulevard (PTH 59) north, Dunning Road, and Henderson Highway (PTH 44).  Additionally six rail lines carry Canadian Pacific and Canadian National trains over the Floodway.  The newly constructed Duff Roblin Parkway Trail active transportation bridge near Bird’s Hill Park brings the total number of bridge structures spanning the channel to 14 (13 actually; Dunning Road is more of a causeway than a bridge).

Cache contains log, pencil, and two TBs for the first finder to decide what to do with.

Congratulations to Jean Déniche for the second of two FTFs in the series!
