Geocache Description:

ENG: "Mirila" are the funeral memorials located on Velebit area.

CRO:

Rješenjem Ministarstva kulture RH od 27. prosinca 2007. posmrtni običaji vezani uz mirila imaju svojstvo nematerijalnog kulturnog dobra u smislu Zakona o zaštiti i očuvanju kulturnih dobara. Parkiralište " P " lako je dostupno sa automobilom. Odavde slijediti putokaz za mirila.

ENG:

"Mirila" were created from 17 to 20 century. Residents of Velebit area, carried the deceased to the cemetery, which could be located over a few kilometers from the house of the deceased. The carriers didn´t stop, until approximately halfway from the house of the deceased and cemeteries. At the place where they firts rest were created "mirila", in a way that the deceased was layed on the ground and two stones marked his body, one stone placed against the head of the deceased and one at the feet of the deceased (a measure of the deceased is title for mirila).

While the deceased was at the ground, or shortly after, the space between two stones of "mirila" is paved and flat stone, where the head was, was curved with different reliefs.

After a rest, carriers proceeded further to the cemetery, where he was burried.

According to popular belief, the soul of the deceased stayed at the "mirila" and in the grave is buried only the body of the deceased. And for this reason they visited "mirila", flowers were left on them, prayers for the dead were sent to mirila, unlike the grave of the deceased, whose bones after a while were taken out, to make room for other deceased from the family (as tombs for them had not a greater importance).

Decision of the Ministry of Culture of Croatia in 2007th funeral customs related to mirila, have the right of intangible cultural heritage in terms of the Act on the Protection and Preservation of Cultural Heritage.

Parking "P" is easily accessible by car. From here, follow the signs for mirila.
