Woorinen South is a small Mallee town of about 300 people located 12 klms north west of Swan Hill. Woorinen owes it's existance to the ancient water soak now known as Harvey's Tank. It was thought to have been a place of importance for the local aboriginal people & it became a vital link in the earliest stock routes of the overlanders & the pastoralists of the 1800's. The Tank can still be seen on the outskirts of town along the Vinifera Road. An interpretive sign commemorates the site.
The centre of this small town boasts a recreation area & bushland reserve which has a walking trail and an opportunity to stretch your legs and discover a surprising variety of surviving native flora & fauna.
The old scout hall is now the home for the Mallee Steam & Oil Machinery Club. This club brings Woorinen South to life annually, with their machinery rally held at the recreation reserve early April.
The surrounding area offers a diverse agricultural harvest, stone fruit & wine, sheep & cattle, vegetable & cereal crops, pistachio nuts & olives. A large wheat storage facility on the outskirts of town is sited on the Vinifera Road just west of Harvey's Tank,is testament to the towns ongoing Mallee heritage.
With a little digging and a little time, there's a surprising amount to be seen and done in and around this friendly Mallee community. So, enjoy the cache find and the town.
NOTE. Please do not disturb undergrowth or pick native plants.
