Hitchin OffRoad - Standhill Copse Traditional Cache
Hitchin OffRoad - Standhill Copse
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions

A camouflaged screw-capped pot. The Cache IS NOT in the Cemetery which should not be entered to reach the cache. Indeed it would be foolhardy to try this approach.
Hitchin has many paths, some of which are ancient and others much more recent. The OffRoad series intends to take the cache to places on the paths, some familiar, others less so. This cache is hidden near a new path although in an old place. Standhill Copse was originally a quarry supplying stone or possibly clay (for bricks) for local buildings. There was a brick pit on St Johns Road, and another, which is now a very large garden pond, on Bearton Road. Since it fell out of use, the quarry developed into a small wood, and there are old stumps as well as more recent growth within the area. NHDC provided a grant to Hertfordshire Countryside Management to develop the copse into a community woodland, with help from local residents. There is now a circular path in the copse, and new native trees have been planted to provide long-term regeneration. The Cache is NOT in the Cemetery. Enter the copse from the corner of Standhill Road and Cemetery Road. The cache is a camouflaged pot with a log only, so bring a writing instrument. Since tree cover is a problem, making accurate coordinates difficult, you should look for the largest easily accessible tree near the coordinates; the cache is in the base of that tree. In summer there are a lot of nettles, so although it is accessible to strollers, it could cause a problem. The path is not suitable for wheelchairs. Parking is available on the adjacent roads.
