Geocache Description:


The Church of St. Swithin, Wickham stands on the site of a Roman camp. The tower was originally a Saxon watch and beacon tower and is the oldest in Berkshire. A nave and small chancel were added later.
Restoration of the body of the church began in 1845 by William Nicholson. As part of the restoration the hammer beam ends in the north aiste were to be decorated with carved angels. However, Nicholson visited the Paris Exhibition of 1855 and saw a set of papier mache elephants which he purchased. It is these elephants that now decorate the hammer beam ends.


The church is located at the top of Church Hill on the left hand side of the road as you go up. There is a small car park in front of the church. Go slowly up the hill as the car park is very easily missed. The entrance to the car park is at N51 26.487 W001 26.048.

At the published coordinates you need to find the post carrying electricity to the church. The number on the post is 621ABCD.

Now find the blocked off window in the tower (N51 26.473 W001 26.017). How many flint blocks are there in the bottom row? This number is E.

Make your way round to the porch (N51 26.472 W001 26.013). Surrounding the doorway there are FG remaining carved flowers. Please count them without touching. As additional help, the number of flowers should be a prime number.

Checksum: A + B + C + D + E + F + G = 26

Now you have a short walk to the find the cache which is a 50 ml tube and is located at:

                N51 2(B-A).(C+D)(E-F)F
                W001 2(B-G).A(G-D)F
