Geocache ROC Fleetwood

Underneath you feet is a The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) Bunker.

The Royal Observer Corps. There are over 1500 ROC bunkers throughout the UK. Their purpose was to provide shelter for the personnel and protection from a Nuclear blast. One of their tasks in the event of the holocaust was to measure and triangulate any explosions and then to pass this information on. Also to warn the public by siren in such an event. In most cases these sites weren’t on any maps or were falsely designated as other things. Basically the posts consisted of an underground room - 15 ft by 7 ft 6 in. The authorities could then assess the damage and fallout situation, issue warnings and decide what level of retaliation to use. There were usually 3 observers on duty at a post at any one time. About 1,500 of sites were built all around the UK, with a peak staffing quota (pre 1968) of 25,000 people. In most cases these sites weren’t on any maps or were falsely designated as other things. Some sites were de-commissioned in 1968, the rest in 1991, most of the fixtures of the earlier shut-down posts were removed. The later ones unless broken into, remain sealed as time capsules f the end of the cold war. The Surface fixtures of this site was removed shortly after it was de-commissioned in September 1991.
