Geocache Description:

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, BOLDRE

The grid above is the Boldre Church, not cache site.
The position of St John the Baptist church, Boldre is somewhat unusual, set on a hill and well away from any village. The church was built in the early 11th century, but there is some speculation that the site may be considerably older, as three Sarsen stones have been found in the foundations. People visiting the site often comment on the tranquillity of the church and grounds.

There are Three special places for you to see whilst visiting the Church

The first is "THE HMS HOOD MEMORIAL"

On the 24th May 1941 at 0600, HMS Hood sank following a catastrophic explosion resulting from a deep pentrating hit from 'Bismarck' Out of a crew of 1418 only three (Midshipman William Dundas, Able Seaman Robert Tiburn and Ordinary Signalman Ted Briggs) survived.
A painting of the Battlecruiser HMS Hood, by Montague Dawson, makes up part of the Hood Memorial in the De Fortibus Chapel. The Kneelers in this chapel repesent most ranks who sailes on the Mighty Hood, from Vice Admiral down to Ordinary Seaman.
The Illuminated Book of Remembrance can be seen near the painting, the book, contains the names of the 1418 officers and men of HMS Hood.
On a Sunday in May each year, a service is held in memory of the Ship's company of HMS Hood. This service is attended by a large number of relatives and friends of those who died and those who had served on the vessel.

The Second is "THE MILLENNIUM WINDOW"

This can be seen when approaching the Church entrance on the right side. so enter the church and see it from inside. In January 1998 Boldre Parochial Church Council wished to mark the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ with a permanent memorial in this church of St John the Baptist. The memorial was to be something exceptional, something beautiful, something to commemorate the faith of Christians who have worshipped here for a thousand years.
The Church Council chose 'glass engraving' to enchance a plain glass window in the south aisle. Tracy Sheppard, Chairman and youngest fellow of the Guild of Glass Engravers, was commissioned to design and execute the work which was installed in April 2000.
