Katajanokan vankila
Muurin takaa löytyvä punatiilinen rakennus tunnetaan myös nimillä Helsingin lääninvankila (vuoteen 2001 asti) sekä Helsingin tutkintavankilana sekä tuttavallisemmin nokkana. Kyseinen rakennus toimi vankilana vuodesta 1837 vuoteen 2002 jolloin siellä toiminut tutkintavankila vankeineen muutti Itä-Hakkilaan valmistuneeseen Vantaan vankilaan. Tunnettuja vankilassa olleita henkilöitä olivat mm. Suomen viides presidentti Risto Ryti sekä pääministeri Väinö Tanner. Molemmat olivat vangittuina sotasyyllisyysoikeudenkäyntien ajan.
Vankilan arjesta eräiden vartijoiden kertomana voidaan mainita mm. seuraavia tapahtumia:
Ulkoilua valvomassa ollut vartija oli testannut erään vangin näköä kun tämä oli oleskellut ulkoilupihan lentopallokentällä ilman lupaa. "Käännyppä ympäri niin testataan sinun näkösi" totesi vartija vangille jolloin vanki kääntyi tuijottamaan kylttiä jossa luki "Muille kuin pelaajille oleskelu kielletty".
Työliikkeellä olleelta vartijalta kyseltiin hänen pätevyyttään erään koneen käyttöön johon vartija totesi: "Onhan mulla tää sininen virkapuku".
Nykyään vankilan tiloissa toimii hotelli sekä ravintola, jonka terassi on aurinkoisella säällä käymisen arvoinen paikka. Myös Muurien sisäpuolella olevassa puistossa kannattaa käydä, jos aikaa löytyy edes ylimääräiset kolme minuuttia.
Kätkön vieressä oleva vaalea talo on toiminut aikaisemmin vankilanjohtajan asuntona ja myös vankilan talouspäällikkö on asunut siinä.
Kätkö on helposti saavutettavissa ratikoilla 4 ja 4T. Henkilöautolla saapuville parkkipaikat ovat maksullisia arkisin klo 9-19. Keskustasta kätkö on myös inhimillisen kävely- ja pyöräilyetäisyyden päässä. Pidäthän huolen että purkin kansi on kunnolla kiinni.
The prison of Katajanokka
Behind the wall close to the cache you can find a large red-tiled building called the Prison of Katajanokka also know as “Nokka” (beak). The prison was operating from the year 1837 to the year 2002 when the prisoners and the staff of the prison moved to the brand new building to Itä-Hakkila, Vantaa. There have been some really well known persons in this prison. E.g. the fifth president of Finland, Risto Ryti and the prime minister Väinö Tanner. Both were held in prison because of the guilt trial to the Finland’s acts in II WW after war.
Here is some captures from the day-to-day life in prison, told by the guards who worked in this prison:
During the outdoor activities one guard tested the eyesight of one prisoner when he was standing on the walleyball court without permission. the guard asked him to turn around and try if he can read the sign on the wall that was saying "No permission other than players".
On the workstead the guard was using some machines and somebody was asking him if he had some kind of competence to use them. The guard just answered "I'm using this blue uniform".
In these days there is a hotel and restaurant in the old prison. Especially the terrace of the restaurant is very nice place if the weather is reasonable. There is also a small park inside the prison wall which I can really recommend if you have more than three minutes extra time.
The light yellow building next to the cache is the old warden’s house. The financial manager of the prison lived also in this house.
The cache is achievable by tram lines 4 and 4T. The parking slots for car’s near to the cache are paid on weekdays from 9am to 7pm. From the city center the distance on foot or by bike is also very reasonable. Please make sure that the lid is closed properly
