Spencer Glacier is one of Alaska's Hidden Treasures. The 5 terrain rating is because this cache is accessible only by Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery train, snowmobile, or a long strenuous hike over mountain passes. This area is definitely less visited especially if one chooses to overnight. The hike/bike from the Whistle Stop is easy on a flat graded gravel path. There are concessionaire run group campgrounds just over a mile from the Whistle Stop and several free individual US Forest Service campsites to be found along the Lakeside Trail.
The train runs mid May until mid September depending on snow conditions. Snowmobiles may be used to access the Spencer Glacier area in winter, depending on snow conditions.
This cache is located near the lakeshore trail leading to the Glacier Overlook. It is a few feet off the entry trail to the first set of free individual campsites provided by the US Forest Service.
The $ attribute is for the cost of the train ride to and from the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. The railroad charges an additional fee for bicycles.
The <10KM attribute is based on taking the train to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop.
