Geocache Description:

Agia Barbara - Prokopata At the end of World War II, the British army erected a bailey bridge as a temporary measure on the road leading out of Argostoli to Sami. (Not so temporary as it turns out and the NOISE of traffic crossing it is horrendous! ) Edit September 2021 to add that - horrendous as the noise was it was characteristic of the bridge. It has now had a layer of concrete (?) put over it and we found that lack of noise a bit sad ☹️ Under the bridge is a very unusual church - the church of Agia Barbara. There are steps leading down and on the hill above is the bell tower. Only half of the church is on view as the other half is actually built into the rock face. There is a large cave and this forms part of the church which also has a natural rock altar. Although no longer used for regular services, it is used for the occasional wedding or baptism. It is said the church was erected by some wealthy parents of a child who was saved while playing in the area. A shepherdess named Barbara was tending her flock and managed to save a child from falling into the valley. The door to the church is usually open and has some interesting icons. The cache is not inside the church, please be respectful of your surroundings. You are looking for a small clip lock box containing a log, a pencil, a bracelet, a wooden animal and a glitter ball key ring Cache will be maintained by a friend who lives on the island in between our visits. ******MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO TWYFORD VALE ON FTF!!!!******
