Franklin Pierce rose rapidly in politics due to the influence of his father, Benjamin. Bored and lonesome in Washington, Pierce developed a dependency on alcohol, and later married a woman active in the Temperance Movement. He became an attorney for the movement, then went into the military rising to Brigadier General during the Mexican-American War. He ended up returning to state and then national politics, running for president against his former commander, General Winfield Scott.
