The Assyrians were one of the most ferocious and feared peoples of the ancient world. Assyrian kings carved out an empire that stretched from the Persian Gulf in the east to Egypt in the west. The secret of Assyria’s success was its excellent army. All adult males could be called up for military service and Assyrian kings could put 50,000 warriors into battle. The Assyrians invented the lancer, a spearman on horseback. Lancers were still used in WWII.
