ELCARO DE CABÓN
EXT. - A CLEARING SOMEWHERE NEAR A LARGE PATCH OF WOODS - DAWN
Screen is black. Shell explosions and machine gun fire can be heard. Gradually the sound of an approaching helicopter drowns out the various noises of war. FADE IN slowly to reveal a soldier watching the chopper as it starts its descent. Before it is firmly on the ground we see Major Fass emerge from the aircraft. Not fearing the blades, he stands tall and chomps on his cigar. The person watching the chopper crouches down, approaches Fass and salutes.
CORPORAL GINELLI
Welcome to the front line, SIR!
MAJOR FASS
At ease, Corporal. Where’s our...problem?
CORPORAL GINELLI
Right this way, sir. (Pauses) He’s not going to like this.
MAJOR FASS
I’m well aware of the situation, Corporal.
CORPORAL GINELLI
Yes, Sir. Follow me, Sir.
CUT TO EXT. - A NEARBY TEMPORARY CAMP - EARLY MORNING
Commanding Officer Benjamin Nathaniel Ames is under military arrest inside a large, guarded tent. Camera pans in slowly as angered voices emanate from within.
COMMANDING OFFICER AMES (V.O.)
This is absolutely ridiculous!
CUT TO INT. - TENT
COMMANDING OFFICER AMES
I am the center of this platoon’s universe, Fass. These boys would be lost without me!
MAJOR FASS
LOST? Six of your men are dead already! A complete collapse is imminent unless you are relieved of your command immediately!
COMMANDING OFFICER AMES
(Slamming his fist)
You can’t separate me from my men!
MAJOR FASS
This isn’t up for negotiation.
COMMANDING OFFICER AMES
If Elcaro gets wind of...
MAJOR FASS
(shouting)
The order came DOWN from Elcaro! He knows exactly what’s been going on here...he knows everything! (Takes a deep breath, then in a calmer tone.) Ben, look. Reports say you’ve cracked...can’t take the pressure. I’ve got no other choice but to agree, and so does Elcaro. He wants you out of commission, and if I don't bring you in he'll remove my lungs with a spoon.
COMMANDING OFFICER AMES
(snarling through his clenched teeth)
Cracked, huh? Can’t take the pressure? You think I’ve gone off the deep end, don’t you? Let me tell you something, Major. There’re various degrees of insanity...many different levels of madness. If you take me down you’ll have an entirely different war on your hands! (Pauses) And Elcaro knows that I don’t make idle threats.
MAJOR FASS
You HAVE lost it. You really want to go toe to toe with Elcaro? Fine. It’s your funeral, my friend. But in the meantime, I’ve got orders to carry out. (Yells over his shoulder.) GUARDS!
The two men stare at each other as the shadowy figures of the guards can be seen entering the tent.
FADE OUT
“OK. Let's say we push this one through...”, the producer said, letting his sentence trail off. He tossed the script onto his desk and leaned back in his leather chair. “I smell a big budget picture here.” He paused for a moment and thought. “A large chunk of change has to go to some names. The studio will want some huge star power in this one.”
The writer pulled a list from his pocket. “If I may be so bold, it just so happens that I’ve jotted down some actors I’d like to see in the leading roles.” He passed the paper over.
