James Garfield, one of six presidents named James, was the first president to talk on the telephone. He spoke with Alexander Graham Bell, who was 13 miles away, and his first words to Bell were, "Please speak a little more slowly." He was shot in the back by a lawyer named Charles Guiteau. Guiteau said he didn't kill Garfield and claimed the doctors did. It appears that is somewhat true as the doctors used dirty fingers and instruments which resulted in the president dying from blood poisoning.
