Deserted village 'Malo Grablje' is located in the inland of the island of Hvar, three kilometers from the shore. It can be reached by foot or bike on the road that leads through the canyon, whose cliffs shield the view towards the sea or from Milna. A new road leads directly to Malo Grablje. You can park there by car.
The village was founded in 16th century, and since then it was populated by the members of a single family that carries the surname Tudor. It is an interesting fact that the surname Tudor does not appear anywhere else in Croatia, and all the Tudors living today in Croatia originate from this village. The first recorded appearance of the Tudor surname on the island of Hvar is dated in 1597. Moreover there is a story about the begining of the village, the so-called 'Legend', that claims that the village was founded by a foreigner, who was the only survivor of a shipwreck of English sailing ship near the island, even suggesting that the foreigner might have been related to the British royal family. However, the story is most likely a fake, since there is no reliable historical evidences to support it.
Acording to 1880. census the village of Malo Grablje had 123 inhabitants, in 1953. recorded number of inhabitants was 115, in 1961. that number dropped down to only 6, and in 1971. the village was officially deserted, while the most of its former residents moved towards the sea side populating the settlement of Milna.
During the summertime there is a little "konoba" opened and worth a visit.

Das verlassene Dorf Malo Grablje ist entweder zu Fuß aus Velo Grablje erreichbar (entlang des ausgetrockneten Baches mit einem 2 km langen Abstieg) oder von der neuen Straße, die aus Hvar in Richtung Stari Grad führt. Malo Grablje befindet sich, fast wie ein Vogelnest in den Klippen, oberhalb der Bucht von Milna. Allein der Weg ist einen Besuch wert: uralte Olivenbäume, Felsklüfte, große Pflanzenvielfalt.
Schon beim ersten Anblick ist man begeistert von den Steinhäusern und stillen Gassen, die sich mit der unberührten Natur vereint haben.
Das Dorf wurde im 16. Jh. Gegründet und wurde von einer einzigen Familie Namens “Tudor” bewohnt, von der alle in Kroatien wohnhafte „Tudors“ abstammen.Die erste Namensregistrierung dieses Nachnamens auf der Insel Hvar stammt aus dem Jahr 1597.Ebenso gibt es eine Legende, die besagt, dass das Dorf von einem Schiffbrüchigen englischen Seefahrer gegründet wurde, der Mitglied des Königshauses war.
Da diese Geschichte aber nicht belegt werden kann, wird sie wohl eine Legende bleiben.
Volkszählungen ergaben folgende Einträge: 1880 hatte das Dorf Malo Grablje 123 Einwohner, im Jahr 1953 wurden 115 Einwohner aufgezeichnet. 1961 sank diese Zahl auf nur 6, und im Jahr 1971 galt das Dorf offiziell als verlassen.
Die meisten seiner ehemaligen Bewohner zogen in Richtung Meer - sie bevölkerten das Dörfchen „Milna“.
Dieser Ort hat mich sehr verzaubert, ich möchte meine Erfahrung gerne mit anderen Geocachern teilen.
Wer möchte, sollte in die kleine "Konoba" einkehren, die nur wenige Monate im Sommer offen hat.
