There is something about the expanse of the side of a barn that invites artwork. Sometimes its just the characteristic coat of red paint, with maybe the name of the farm on it, but like the hex symbols that could be found on the barns of the Pennsylvania Dutch in times past, today's barn quilts are intricate masterpieces that can be freely viewed by anyone who comes across them on country roads all across America.
While barn quilts and barn quilt trails can be found in several Wisconsin counties, we never knew of any near us until we were driving on County H from White Creek to Highway Z. We spotted the painted quilt on a barn off to the southwest, and we took a couple of photos of it. Knowing that barn quilts have drawn geocachers to other parts of the state, most noticeably in Green County, we are placing a cache for you to visit near the barn quilt that we discovered on our wanderings around Adams County.
We have also discovered that the county to the east of this cache location, Marquette County, has several barn quilts and murals, and an active group that promotes the barn quilt trail. You can get more information on that, and perhaps plan a visit over that way after finding the County H cache, by clicking on the Related Web Page link at the top of this cache page. You can also read more about the history of barn quilts at Barn Quilt Info and by clicking on the "barn quilt history" image (taken from American Barn Quilt) in the gallery on this cache page.
Hmmmm.... All of this barn quilt research has led us to ponder what we want to do with that broad expanse on the back of our garage when we repaint it shortly. Barn quilts can be found anywhere!
