This series is based on my favorite book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin. It is a series of epic fantasy novels containing a myriad of characters, political intrigue, fantastic battles, magic, and, of course, dragons. The first book is titled A Game of Thrones, which is also the name of the TV series on HBO that is based on these novels. This geocache series will highlight the characters from the series.
The series begins with a focus on Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark. Ned is strong, noble, and just man, based in the northern part of the Seven Kingdoms. It is always cold in the North, and the people who live there are necessarily a tough and resilient people. Ned Stark is the Guardian of the North, and lord of the all lesser nobles ruling throughout the north. Lord Stark answers only to the King of the Seven Kingdoms, who resides and rules from the city of Kings Landing in the south.
As a young man, Ned Stark joined with his best friend, Robert Baratheon, to rebel against and overthrow the “mad king”. Robert became king, and Ned ruled the north and cared for his family, which included his wife and six children. However, when the king’s closest advisor and ally, the King’s Hand, suddenly dies, Ned agrees to move to Kings Landing and serve the king as the second most powerful man in the kingdom. Ned’s sense of honor and justice do not serve him well in a devious and corrupt court, however. A betrayal leads to a series of events plunging the kingdom into chaos and war, and setting the stage for a magnificent series, where you can never predict what will happen next.
