The yellowhammer is a common name for the yellow-shafted flicker (Colaptes auratus auratus), a subspecies of the northern flicker (Colaptes auratus), which is a medium-sized member of the woodpecker family. This grey and beige bird has golden-yellow feathers under the wings and tail. The yellowhammer is prevalent throughout the eastern United States and is the state bird of Alabama. The cache name is taken from a traditional University of Alabama cheer.
