Geocache Description:

History and mystery!

This cache is placed on the 149th Anniversary of the Bullion Bend Stagecoach Robbery, which occurred near this site on the evening of June 30th 1864.  Two Wells Fargo Stage coaches, driven by Ned Blair and Charles Watson, were en route from Virginia City to Placerville when they were held up by men later found to be associated with Quantrill’s Raiders.  They got away with an estimated $40,000 worth of silver bullion for which they gave the stage drivers a receipt, claiming to be raising funds for the recruiting efforts of the Confederate Army.  Sherrif William Rogers’ Posse caught up with the robbers at the Somerset House where a shootout left El Dorado County Sherriff Deputy Joseph Staples dead and another injured.  The robbers escaped but were later caught by a Santa Clara County sheriff and one, Thomas Poole, was tried and hanged in Placerville in 1865.  The silver bullion was never recovered and may still be “cached” somewhere! The Placerville Parlor of Native Sons and Daughters built the monument in 1916.

This is a small cache placed  very close to the monument and the road. Please be respectful of private property nearby and do not park in driveways or search in yards.

Bring your own pen.  Cache contains a log only and is too small for most trade items but has one of nature’s treasures for FTF.

Congratulations to MSAKGold for FTF!!! Thanks to Scoobert for logging the link to the archived cache, A Bend in the Road GCJEVY which has a very detailed description of the robbery. Update: 9/2017 Cache replaced. Difficulty and terrain changed to 1/1 to make accessible to mobile users without premium subsbription including cache owner.
