Geocache Description:

This cache requires prior planning.

The land on either side of Goose Creek is private property, therefore, you will need a canoe or kayak and prior planning to reach this cache.

This cache was placed while we made our way down this scenic creek because sooner or later we all need a rest stop and another quick cache. We recommend that you make a day of it and begin on Goose Creek west of Middleburg and end at the take out at Evergreen Mills Road (small parking spot on west side of bridge over Goose Creek at Evergreen Mills Rd).

We owe the placement of this cache and most of the information on this page to B-Sharps. If they had not placed their Goose Creek 4 cache series we would have never been here either.

B-Sharps series consist of:
GiAnts Rock
The Tan Tube
Tree Guts
Goose Creek

Unfortunately these caches are no longer available. However this is still a neat spot on the creek to visit so I will keep it out here.

You may want to do some research through our logs to give you an idea of how long it may take to complete all of the caches in the series and make a stop at our rest area. You may, even, choose to make an overnight stay at the very accomodating Meadowkirk Retreat and Conference Center. If you are planning on overnighting it, contact Meadowkirk beforehand to pay the camping fee. The location is very nice, just please practice leave no trace camping. See the Additional Waypoints for the take out coordinates for their campsite.

Goose Creek has a limited window for paddling, and should only be visited during recommended water levels (based on data from Middleburg and Leesburg water monitoring stations):
Middleburg *Minimum: 2.8'
Leesburg *Minimum: 2.0'
*At these levels, you will experience "scratchy paddling" where you will bottom out with relative frequency. Anything below these levels will be very difficult to navigate and require regular dragging of your boat over sand bars and down class I riffles.
Middleburg **Recommended: 3.0'
Leesburg **Recommended: 2.3'
**This water level should provide an ideal balance of enough water to float over almost every shallow area but not present a danger of having the strong water currents associated with higher water.
Middleburg !!Maximum!!: 3.4'
Leesburg !!Maximum!!: 2.7'
!!We are very reluctant to make a claim of safety, but we still want to say that these are the maximum safe levels that we would paddle Goose Creek. There are at least 5 blow-downs (fallen trees that lay part or all the way into the water) that cross the entire creek. As with any moving water body, these blow-downs could present significant danger to a paddler called strainers.
Under recommended conditions, this section of Goose Creek is very placid, with flat sections intertwined with very easy to maneuver class I rapids.

The current water levels for Goose Creek in Middleburg and Leesburg are displayed below. This link will give you a water level forecast for the next 3 days.
