At the northern edge of Highland Park is a leanto overlooking Limestone Valley. Don't tell anyone, but there are rare but tasty strawberries on the hill in June and lots of blackberries on the trail in early September. From the looks of the interior of the leanto, some desperate critters must take to eating the paint to get through the winter. But don't be discouraged, winter is also a terrific time to visit, as this is situated right on a snowshoe trail. Anyway...you're looking for a 3x3x7 shellaced wooden box that Jasper and I built this weeknd. I'm hoping the woodland critters don't have a taste for shellac.
To access the cache, head out from behind the Skyline Lodge. See the opening at the end of the field if you head east from the lodge parking lot? That's the end of the Main Trail. Or in your case, the beginning. You should follow these orange blazes through the terrific forest 1.5 miles (or so) to the overlook. By continuing to the North Country Trail or to the Shortcut Trail via Arab Hill, you can turn this into a nice loop.
