South Shore Phrases is a series to honor some of the areas we have cached. Each description contains a colourful phrase that is reported to be used in or originated along the South Shore of Nova Scotia. All phrases were selected from the book The South Shore Phrase Book complied by Lewis J Poteet (published 1983).

Cat spruce is used to describe scrub evergreens which grow near the shore where trees can't grow tall. - Liverpool

People on Cape Sable Island  say the name cat spruce was applied because if you "bring one into the house for a Christmas tree, in a few days it'll smell like you've let the tomcat in!"
