Cobar was formed by the discovery of a copper lode in 1870. Cobar was linked to the natural forces of drought and flooding rains which dominate the western plains. In 1869 Charles Campbell a 19 yr old Danish Bicklayer, Thomas Hartman a 19 yr old Danish Seaman and George Gibb a 16 yr ols Scottsman were working in the Bourke District. Widespread flooding in 1870 forced the team to head south. The party found blue/green streaks of colour in the mud on the side of a water hole. They were impressed so took samples of the minerals. The rest is History.
