Herbert Hoover, the only Iowan elected president, has his presidential library just north of here in West Branch. Hoover and his wife are also buried nearby the library. Hoover was an orphan. His first job was picking bugs off potato plants, and he received a dollar for every 100 bugs. He later was a mine worker. Hoover gained a reputation as a humanitarian in World War I by leading hunger-relief efforts in Europe as head of the American Relief Administration. From there he moved into the post of US Secretary of Commerce and spearheaded the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Hoover Dam.

** A note from IowaChupacabra: Hello! I am attempting to maintain Blue Grass Tom’s geocaches. Have fun as you travel and explore up and down these Iowa back country roads to find the geocaches in this series. As you do so, if you happen upon a wet log, torn bag, or cracked/damaged/missing container, and graciously make the choice to add/replace paper/bag or change out/replace a container, I would certainly appreciate it and Thank You for the help. I attempt to make a run through the area every few months to fix the problems noted in the logs, but there’s always something! Thank You!
