The town of Sleaford is in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, located between Grantham, Boston and Lincoln. It is a market town and has been since 1120. The name means ‘ford over a muddy stream’ and comes from the Old English ‘esla’ and ‘forde’. It is now known as the River Slea. This river was the main trade route for many years and was canalised in 1794. It was superseded by the railways in the 1850’s.
Sleaford is twinned with Marquette-lez-Lille (a commune in the Nord department in northern France) and Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf (a municipality in the district Märkisch-Oderland, in Brandenburg, Germany).
