This Reserve is so good that we thought it deserved a second cache. Ratapihipihi has some huge old trees, original bush and magnificent nikaus. There is a choice of two looped tracks in excellent condition. The tracks are well graded though steep in places, and guides you through coastal forest and past a scenic waterfall. There is a large sheltered picnic area next to the carpark. Look out for the two old saw pits beside the track, which are remnants of historical logging operations.
The shortest way to the cache is to take the right hand track (Waterfall Loop) going in an anticlockwise direction. . GPS coverage can be very patchy so look for the big buttress tree (Pukatea) on your right with a baby Nikau in front. Bring your own pencil.Good idea to have a look at the gallery before you go.
