Most people have heard of a Doctor, or know what a Nurse is, but Certified Surgical Technologists(CST) are not as well known. The CST is the right hand to the Surgeon, the one who's first priority is the safety of the patient while they lay defenseless on the OR bed. 'Aeger Primo' which is Latin for patient first is our motto. The CST is there to set up the OR suite, collect the instruments and supplies for the case, prepare the sterile field and assist the surgeon during the surgery by handing them the items they need at the time they need them. Anticipation is a major factor for the surgery to be done in a safe and timely manner. Knowing every step in the procedure gives the CST a better understanding of what supplies they will need and also that they will have the correct items ready at the time they are needed.
In the past 15 yrs I have worked all hours, holidays and weekends seen things no one should witness. I love what it means to be a CST.
Being a CST isn't about the glamour of medicine you see on TV. Rarely are you going to get any acknowledgement, for doing your job. You do this job because you are helping others in ways many people can't. Even some Doctors and Nurses can't do what we do, but we do it because we love it. Please understand, there is going to be blood, bones, organs, feces, urine and some things you can't identify. You are going to see things that people do to one another and/or themselves that you never thought possible, but that is the life of a Certified Surgical Technologist...
