A petition for a state school was forwarded by local residents on 6 July 1878.
On 17 January 1881, builders Messers C Drew & Co had erected a portable building for the Irrewillipe East school for the sum of 26 pounds.
Permission was granted on 8 January 1947 to construct a residence for the sum of 1334 pounds.
The first teacher was Amelia M Yeoman. There were 33 head teachers in total with the last teacher being Russell Adams.

Student numbers peaked to the low 50's in the 1950's. Irrewillipe East Primary School closed in 2000, enrolments decreased when most families of the district chose for their children to catch a bus to school in Colac.
