ABOUT THE LOCATION
The old city of Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่) began at this very spot in the year 1296, when King Mengrai commissioned his people to construct the walls around the city, starting with the Northeast corner. Banyan trees - believed to be a source of power and richness - were grown here. And a large water reservoir was located a few hundred meters North. Perhaps that is why this corner was chosen to be the beginning point for the city of Chiengmai (which means new city).
Today, much of the defensive walls are gone, though the main gates and corners still stand. The wall has been destroyed many times in the past, and yet rebuilt time after time. Much of what you see at this location is the not the original corner from 1296, but may be a variation of the original concept built, burned, destroyed and re-built throughout the past 800+ years.
