THE SQUARE
Columbia Square was laid out in 1799 and is named for Columbia (see next paragraph), the poetic personification of the United States. It is located on Habersham, between State and York Streets. In the center of the square is a fountain that formerly stood at Wormsloe, the estate of Noble Jones, one of Georgia's first settlers. It was moved to Columbia Square in 1970 to honor Augusta and Wymberly DeRenne, descendants of Jones. It is sometimes called the "rustic fountain," as it is decorated with vines, leaves, flowers, and other woodland motifs.
COLUMBIA
Columbia is a historical and poetic name used for the United States of America and is also the name of its female personification. It has inspired the names of many persons, places, objects, institutions, and companies; such as the District of Columbia, the site of the national capital; and Columbia University. Columbia was largely displaced as the female symbol of the U.S. by the Statue of Liberty circa 1920.
THE CACHE
PLEASE DO NOT POST SPOILERS IN LOGS OR PICTURES OR LOG WILL BE DELETED.
This cache is on the VERY small side of a micro. I did four waypoint averages and my Oregon 450t still varied from 4 – 23ft. For some reason there seems to be a lot of GPS’r “bounce” here. So, have a seat, enjoy the view and let yourself and your GPS’r relax for a few. Please be gentle with the container and replace EXACTLY as found.
(Parking availability depends on when you attempt this cache. Parking on nearby streets is pay to park until 5 P.M. and free after 5 and on weekends.)
