From Piot Crag, follow the east ridge down to Small Water, nestled into the small bowl in the hillside. The ridge has a couple of crags to circumvent, and is a reasonable angle but presents no problems. Easier going down than up, we think! Some dramatic boulders sit on the side of the Nan Bield Pass path, and a small craggy knoll marks the start of the beck and path descending to Mardale. Head for the Knoll to find the cache. There's also a good spot for a wild camp on a lovely piece of flat grass by the knoll.
The Nan Bield Pass track is then followed back down to the road at Mardale Head to complete the round. We hope you enjoy your excursion around Mardale Waters! A dramatic and beautiful corner of the Lakes.
