Morris Canal Plane 9 Boat Basin Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

Built in the 1830's the Morris Canal stretched across northern NJ from the Delaware River to Newark Bay.  Instead of locks, it used a unique series of inclined planes to deliver canal boats to the next elevation.  There are three inclined planes in Montville.  At the bottom and top of each plane was a wide basin that held canal boats waiting to go up or down the plane.

The wet, swampy and nasty area below the cache is the former canal boat basin at the top of Plane 9. This entire area is about to become a linear park that follows the route of the canal. Signs have been installed and volunteers are working to clear the canal bed and towpath.

Best access is from Emery Lane. Though it looks like a driveway, it is actually a public street. A parking lot will be constructed on Emery Lane eventually, but for now it's OK to park on it as long as you don't block the road.
