You, are the lean, lanky and extremely superstitious school master Ichabod Crane, and you've just attend the annual harvest party of the well-to-do Van Tassel's. The festivity was filled with much song, dance, food and of course Katrina Van Tassel, the beautiful and only daughter of the wealthy Baltus Van Tassel. You've been infatuated with Katrina since the very day you first laid eyes on her, and think nothing else but to make her your bride. This evening Katrina and you shared many quick glances and bashful smiles with one another, and even paired in a dance! You however, were unaware of the sneers being made towards you by the towns rowdy Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, who also has an affinity towards Katrina. His leave went unnoticed by many as the harvest dance continued to liven with the tapping of yet another keg of ale.

Long after the party and well past midnight, you begin the journey home to your lonely cottage across the river. You gather your overcoat to block the bone-chilling breeze, and notice something in your waist-coat pocket. Your surprised to pull out a letter and immediately recognize the beautifully scrolled penmanship of Katrina's which reads,"Ichabod". You stumble in the darkness to get the envelope open and by the light of your lantern you read the mysterious message.

"My dearest Ichabod,

I haven't the time to write all the things I would like to say in this simple letter, but I know you're fond of me. I feel the same for you, but father and the town's elders would look wry on the matter. Not to mention Brom, whom I've overheard speaking ill of you on many occasions. I fear your safety if I were to announce my true feelings for you...
