There is a layby/receded gate entrance where you can park as long as you don't obstruct the gate. It is just outside the ringfort on the other side of the road. The turnoff to the Aillwee Cave is only a few metres further down the road towards Ballyvaughan.
The cache is a box big enough to take two books. Now here is the deal: Feel free to take an item. But if you take one, you have to put one of equal value into the box, or a scratch-free DVD. Ideal for those on holidays when they have run out of books to read! You can of course just log our visit without taking / leaving anything.
The container is in danger of being exposed if you don't hide it again as you found it! Please push the container to the left and place the stone in front of it - upright. Please make sure the box is invisible even from the side.
I placed the book on the day of the Ballyvaughan Book Club, and one of the two first books is called "The Book Club" (unfortunately the book is no longer with us, as it got totally drenched). Hence the name of the cache.
About the ringfort:
Ballyallaban Ring Fort is an earth fort, thus the name it is usually called: An Rath. Surrounded by a fosse (a generally flooded moat or defensive ditch), the fort was built up and may have had a protective fence of sharp pointed stakes. While earth structures are the most common type of ancient monument in Ireland, they are rare in the rocky Burren area.
In memory of Judith who departed on this day.
