Geocache Description:

Credit River - Shipwreck Series

USS Monitor
December 31, 1862

There are many shipwrecks around the world. Some very famous and others not so. Each however has it’s own story to tell. As you travel along the Credit River doing this series of caches, we have highlighted a number of these shipwrecks. During low water levels on these parts of the Credit River, you need to be careful in a canoe or kayak so as you don’t wind up in your own shipwreck. Besides the many large rocks along the way, there are also some other obstacles such as dams which should be avoided. All of the geocaches in this series have been placed by tubing, inflatable boat or on foot by walking in the water along the Credit River. Whichever way you choose to search for these caches, use caution and common sense.

USS Monitor
USS Monitor, was an iron hulled steamship and the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States Navy during the American Civil War. Designed by the Swedish-born engineer and inventor John Ericsson, the Monitor is most famous for her participation in the Battle of Hampton Roads on 9 March 1862, where she fought with the Confederate casemate ironclad CSS Virginia (the former steam frigate USS Merrimack) to a standoff. This was the first-ever battle fought between two armored warships and marked a turning point in ships' design and how naval battles would be fought in the future.

After the Confederates were forced to destroy the Virginia in early May, Monitor sailed up the James River to support the Army during the Peninsula Campaign. The ship participated in the Battle of Drewry's Bluff later that month and remained in the area until she was ordered to join the blockaders off North Carolina in December. She foundered while under tow during a storm off Cape Hatteras on the last day of the year. Her wreck was discovered in 1973 and has been partially salvaged. Monitor's armament, gun turret, engine and other relics are on display at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
