Il luogo indicato è lo scenario dell’eruzione dell’Etna del 1991-’93, che minacciò seriamente la cittadina di Zafferana Etnea. La contrada prende il nome di Piano dell’Acqua, ad indicare la sua ricchezza in sorgenti d’acqua. Cominciata il 14 dicembre 1991 e terminata il 30 marzo del 1993, fu l'eruzione etnea di più lunga durata tra quelle recenti; la lava, fuoriuscita da un sistema di fratture a 3.100 metri, si riversò nella Valle del Bove, poi in Val Calanna, spingendosi infine verso l’abitato. La popolazione locale, ormai pronta ad evacuare il paese per l’avvicinarsi del fronte lavico, in preda alla disperazione, si aggrappò alla fede e portò in processione la statua della Madonna della Provvidenza, Patrona di Zafferana. In quel luogo, dove poi si arrestò la lava, sorge oggi una stele con la statua della Madonna in marmo bianco, eretta in segno di ringraziamento dagli abitanti. A pochi metri da essa si trova l’imponente colata lavica; ci troviamo a circa 800 metri dal centro abitato.
