Geocache Description:

#10 of the Big 4-0 Challenge celebrating McCallBennett's 40th birthday!

This series of caches is being placed in honor of my wife, McCallBennett, for her 40th birthday. The locations of the caches are significant to one or both of us and relate to our relationship from meeting to over eight years of marriage. Happy birthday, Babe!

Epic adventure is epic!

To mark the 10th cache in the Big 4-0 Challenge, we are creating an urban adventure for you. BYOP! This cache is inspired by GC4BTTB, I Love Montrose - Night cache only (http://coord.info/GC4BTTB). McCall and I loved that cache and the idea behind it, so we are taking the same concept and transporting it to the middle of the hood! During the summer, MacArthur Park hosts free concerts on the weekends so expect big crowds. We chose this location both because of it's absolute cache barrenness, and because we had a particularly memorable family walk through the park after one such concert. Also, a little fun factoid, the city stocks the lake with fish that you are free to catch and eat!

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates, but that is where your expedition begins.

Your quest, should you choose to undertake it, is to navigate a marked path and locate the secret treasure hidden within these grounds. It is said that in time immemorial a sect of wizards transformed the Cyclops who lived here into trees, elevated light stands (lamp posts), and occasionally other structures as well. However, their eyes remain and will peer back at you, but only when struck directly by a spell of illumination. These eyes will guide your path.

Pay attention, epic adventurer, because you will need to equip yourself properly before setting out on your search. You must possess the Torch of Strength (a strong flashlight), the Patience of Persistence, and the Courage of Courageousness. Once you are ready, locate the Gate of Entry beneath the Eagle's Span (the starting coordinates). Legend says the wise seeker will face to the North and East to begin their quest and proceeding directly ahead will veer to the left. Unfortunately, Legend died of a pox shortly thereafter and no further information is available.

The Cyclops were known to live in a close community and did not like to stray too far from others of their kind. As a result, when you see an eye you will be able to find the next eye from the first eye's location. If you understand, say "Aye". However, your eye must be as sharp as an eagle's eye to spy some eyes, says I. In fact, the very bold or the dim of sight may find it necessary to forge ahead in faith before spying the ensuing oculus. The trail at times may prove inclined and grassy, however, the better part will be along smooth and hardened pathways. Your quest concludes when you find a double eyed Cyclops, the mystical Biclops! Look here for your reward.

True heroes of lore may desire further epicness. To such we say, "Carry on!" Indeed, the path proceeds for those of a mind to continue the adventure. But be forewarned, the eyes are of a greater distance between, and there will be no other treasures for you to attain. It is only for the glory of your name that you seek the Biclops' mate, the Other Biclops.

A wise traveler will note that the grounds are hidden from ten and thirty of the moon until five of the morrow (the park is closed from 10:30pm to 5:00am), but rumors swirl that it is quite common to find souls wandering the greens at all hours of day and night. These are mostly roamers and vagabonds without a bed to call their own. Likely, they will not disturb your travels, but they may find your quest curious to their eyes. These same wanderers oft times mark their territories according to the call of their god, Bacchus. As such, prepare thine nose for the odor of Uryn.

A final disclaimer in plain English: This cache is NOT for everyone! If you are not used to this part of town, you may want to skip this one. The Buddy System would be a good idea for this challenge, so find a fellow cacher to enjoy the evening with you. The path you will take is (mostly) well lit. But again, if you've never been to MacArthur Park before, you probably don't want to wander it for the first time in the dark.

The cache is a magnetized locking tupperware container with lots of room for trade items and trackables. The initial cache contents include a log, unregistered Firefly Cachekinz for FTF, and a TB that I'm launching in this cache.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be super stealthy retrieving and replacing this cache. It's hidden from plain sight, but it's bigger than you'd expect in such a public place and I don't want it getting muggled.

Congrats to w01f for FTF!
Congrats to TheScoobs and Virge for co-STF!
