EVERYONE is invited to celebrate with us at the 2013 Geo-Picnic.
This year we will be at Lake Afton, Shelter #5.
All participants are being asked to help make this a grand feast with much abundance for all simply by bringing a side dish, or by bringing supplies, or both. We're looking forward to that favorite dish of yours. Please mention your dish in your "Will Attend" log and we will add it to the list at the bottom of this page.
Here is what we have lined up so far.
Disclaimer: This list may change as the days go by, so keep an eye on the itinerary. Times may even be “flexible” on the day of the Picnic.
ALL DAY you can try out GeoGolf!

|
GeoGolf (from GPSgames.org) is a game in which players use GPS receivers to navigate to 18 randomly placed waypoints. Your score depends on how close you can get to each of the waypoints. The closer you get, the lower your score. Low score wins, just like real golf. Login to GPSgames.org to record your distance.
(Hint: To make it easier, the dashpoints around Lake Afton are all on or near roads, except one.)

*** LAKE OFFICE ***
-
Be sure to stop by the Lake Office to pick up your vehicle day pass. Normally it will cost you at least $3 dollars for a vehicle day pass, but if you tell them that you are with the SHELTER #5 GEOCACHING GROUP, you will be able to get a vehicle day pass for FREE! What a bargain! Drive around and do loads of lakeside caching for FREE! BUT you have to tell them that you are with the SHELTER #5 GEOCACHING GROUP. These are the perks of being with the in-group.
*** HOW TO GET HERE ***
The EASIEST way is like this...
-
From Wichita,
Drive WEST on Kellogg (also known as U.S.54 and U.S.400), leaving Wichita and continue driving THROUGH the city of Goddard, almost to Garden Plain.
-
Gas up in Goddard if you need to.
-
When you get to 263rd Street, turn south on that road. This spot is Reference Waypoint #1 shown below. It’s a paved road.
-
Go south on 263rd Street for 3 miles to 39th Street (also known as MacArthur Road). This spot is Reference Waypoint #2.
-
From there, drive east for almost a mile to reach the geocaching pleasure resort of Sedgwick County's spectacularly beautiful Lake Afton.
-
If you would like to make a stop at the Lake Office to pick up a vehicle day pass, you can do that on the way. Be sure to read about the Lake Office.
*** OTHER ROUTES IF YOU SO BRAVELY CHOOSE... ***
MacArthur Road is paved all the way east into Wichita.
For those who try to get lost, there are other paved roads going north and south between Kellogg and MacArthur Road. These roads are the following:
-
Maize Road
-
119th St W (aka Millbrook Road)
-
135th St W
-
183rd St W
-
199th St W (aka Goddard Road)
-
215th St W
Highway K-42 (aka Southwest Boulevard) cuts through the county heading southwest out of Wichita and meets up with MacArthur Road between Maize Road and 119th Street in an area called Shulte (almost rhymes with Gull Teeth).
We will have a larger than life Ammo Can to have your picture taken in.
You can GET IN IT!
That’s too little!
This will be BIGGER!

No, no! Put that tiny little thing away.
This will be BIGGER – much, MUCH BIGGER!!
